RTE'S Tommie back in his old school for its big day

ST JOHN'S Co-educational National School at Temple Street in Sligo has opened a new art and science room.

RTE'S Northern editor Tommie Gorman, a past pupil of the school, officially cut the ribbon while Patron and Bishop of Elphin, Christopher Jones blessed the new state of the art facility. A large attendance from the wider school community joined in the celebrations.

Mr Bernard Mulhern, School Principal, said it was a proud day for him, the pupils and staff to have such an excellent facility as part of their school. He added that pupils would now be given an even greater opportunity to express themselves individually through art and to explore the world of science

Dr Billy Fitzgerald, Head of Environmental Science at the Sligo Institute of Technology spoke of this wonderful initiative for a Primary School and looked forward to forming a link between the school and the Institute. He also encouraged the pupils to pursue a career as a scientist.

Canon Tom Hever, Chairperson of the Board of Management was delighted to be part of such a great innovation and wished all the pupils and staff continued success. Bishop Jones recalled that he taught Science at Summerhill College for a brief period and really enjoyed the subject. He encouraged the pupils to grasp this opportunity provided for them to further enhance their primary school education.

Tommie Gorman spoke of his great admiration for the school and shared many happy memories of his time at St Johns. He said he was honoured to be part of such an innovative development. He spoke of the teachers as being magicians and that they now had a fantastic facility in the School to help them spread their magic.he complimented everyone associated with the project and acknowledged their vision.

The Art and Science room is large and bright and fully equipped with Art and Science materials. The pupils expressed their delight while modelling clay while others were experimenting with electricity and magnetism.

St John's National School will be holding their Open/enrolment Day on Friday March 2nd 2012 between 1.15-4pm. Prospective parents and pupils are encouraged to come along and view these excellent facilities for themselves.
