NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2012


Dear Parents

By now your child will be well settled at St. John’s and we hope that he/she will be very happy here.  If you have any queries or concerns please contact us.

We welcome 3 new teachers to our staff.  Ms Claudia Weissmann, Ms Cathy Keaney (career break) and Ms Eimear Caffrey(maternity leave).. We also congratulate Ms Orla McGowan on her permanent appointment.  We hope that they will be very happy at St. John’s N.S.

A reminder to all parents to please put a name tag on all coats, jumpers etc. A number of jumpers have been handed into the office with no name tags.

A sincere thank you to all those who have paid the Heating Contribution of €40 (€70 for 2 or more) and also the payment for Arts/Crafts/Tests of €25.00.
A reminder to those who have not yet paid.

Dates for your diary:
29th Oct – 2nd November – mid term break.
21st March 2013 – First Confession
28th April 2013 – First Holy Communion.


A timetable of school holidays for the year was given to all pupils before the summer break.  Anyone who did not receive same can get a copy from the school office.


Co. Sligo VEC Family Learning Staff will be holding a course in St. John’s
N.S. for parents of Junior & Senior Infants entitled “Play & Learn with your Junior/Senior Infant”.  It will run from Tuesday 13th Nov – February 2013 from 9.45 am to 11.45 am.  If you are interested in attending please contact the office.

TEXT A PARENT SERVICE::
We hope to shortly introduce the text a parent service at St. Johns N.S.  This will allow us to instantly communicate important messages to you.  In order to introduce this service we need to have all pupil information and contact telephone numbers up to date.  Please complete the attached form and return to school office asap.

TEAM HOPE IRELAND:
Following the success of last years “Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal”, we are hoping that parents will support us in this worthy cause again this year.  The Christmas shoe boxes travel to areas of severe poverty in Eastern Europe & Africa.  If you are interested in taking part please bring your shoebox to Ms Devenney in Room 1 by Friday 26th of October.


Congratulations to Ms Avril O’Hanlon on the birth of her daughter and to Kevina Dunleavey on he birth of her son.

ABSENCES/ APPOINTMENTS:
Please note if pupils are absent from school or if parents need to take children from class during the day to attend doctor/dentist appointments they must show a copy of medical certificate/or appointment letter to the teacher, as per NEWB guidlelines.


PARENTS ASSOCIATION AGM.
The AGM of the Parents Association will be held in the School on Tuesday 16th of October at 8.30 pm.  This is a very important part of our school community and we are always looking for new faces.  Please come along on the night for a
cuppa/chat.
 

CASH FOR CLOBBER::
The school is organising a Cash for Clobber textile recycling collection.  All clean clothing, shoes (in pairs), handbags, belts, bed linen & curtains are accepted.  This will then generate funds for the school and will also help to provide clothing and other textiles for developing Countries.  If you have any unwanted clothing etc. please drop them to the school on the following dates:
 Friday 19th October
 Friday 16th November
 Friday 7th December


Homework is a very important aspect of each pupil’s education.  Please ensure that you check same on a daily basis.  Please also sign the test copy weekly.

Green Schools: We are going for our 4th green flag this year.  It is based on “travel”.  More information to follow.


 
Please note that smoking is strictly prohibited on school grounds.

Dogs with the exception of guide dogs are not allowed on school grounds, as per
Health & Safety regulations.


Pupils are asked to walk on the footpath as they enter/leave the school.  They are not allowed to run in under the trees.  Their safety is our concern and trees/shrubs have been damaged since September.  We ask for your co-operation on this matter.


The Croke Park Agreement provides for 36 additional hours per school year allocated to non class contact activities, after 3pm.  Our B.O.M. signs off on the usage of this time.  These additional hours help us to plan/implement a wide ranging curriculum for our pupils.  Hours for 2011/2012 Academic year were as follows:

Policy Development  6 hours
Staff meetings  8 hours
School arranged inservice 8 hours
Induction   2 hours
   36 hours


Assembly        
Halloween – we will have a fancy dress assembly on Friday 26th of October at
10.40am in the hall.  All parents are welcome.
